3 Tips for Planning a Summer Whitewater Experience in Idaho

Summer is whitewater rafting season in Idaho. As mountain snowpack melts, the state’s rivers swell and attract outdoor adventurers and thrill-seekers of all kinds. You may be one of those thrill-seekers.

While Snake River whitewater rafting tours make it easy to prepare for these kinds of adventures, there are a few details you’ll want to keep in mind as you get ready for your trip in the coming months. These are tips that can help you get more out of your time on the river.

Tip #1: Be Ready for Hot, Sunny Days

Even with cold water splashing all around you, it gets plenty hot on Idaho’s rivers, including the Snake River and Salmon River. While exact conditions vary over the course of the summer, going into late July and August, temperatures can reach 90-plus degrees during the day.

Pack accordingly. Lightweight, quick-drying, and moisture-wicking clothing is a must. Bring options that offer UV protection, as well. Lightweight, long-sleeve sun hoodies are a great option on the river, and sunglasses and sunblock are also a must.

Tip #2: Bring Two Pairs of Shoes

When you’re Salmon River whitewater rafting Idaho, or any river in the state, you will get wet. The shoes or sandals you're wearing will get wet. And they’re going to stay wet until you’re out of the water and you set them in the sun to dry.

Bringing along a second pair of shoes or rugged sandals means you always have a dry pair waiting for you at the end of a day of rafting.

Tip #3: Try Out the Non-Rafting Activities

If you booked an all-inclusive Snake River Idaho rafting trip (which is a fantastic way to experience Idaho’s rivers), your tour company likely offers or suggests additional activities along the way, like kayaking, fishing, and hiking.

If you want to get the most out of your trip, try some of these activities. Kayaking puts you up close and personal with the river. Fishing can be full of memorable moments and serene beauty. Hiking is a great way to take in incredible views of the surrounding landscape, and it’s a great photo op!
